🔧 Forging Process & Quality
What's the difference between forged and cast pistons? ▼
Forged pistons are made by heating aluminum to 400°C+ and forming it under high pressure. The metal grain flows along the shape, creating a denser, stronger part. Cast pistons use molten aluminum poured into a mold — the grain structure is random and can have porosity. Forged strength is 30-50% higher, at a higher cost.
What forging process does JA Modified use? ▼
We use hot forging. 2618 aluminum is heated to 400-500°C, forged under high pressure, then T6 heat treated (solution + artificial aging), followed by full CNC machining to final dimensions. Every step has quality checks.
What's the difference between forged and cast connecting rods? ▼
Forged rods: 4340/4140 steel bar → forged to shape → heat treated (quench + temper to 38-42 HRC) → CNC machining → shot peening → magnaflux inspection. Cast rods: molten steel poured → cooled → normalized → rough machining. Forging aligns the grain flow along the rod shape, giving far better fatigue strength.
What is your CNC precision tolerance? ▼
Piston outer diameter: ±0.005mm. Pin bore: ±0.003mm. Skirt profile: CNC elliptical turning. Rod big end bore: ±0.005mm. Rod small end: ±0.003mm. Center-to-center: ±0.025mm. All finished parts are CMM verified.
Do you do shot peening on rods? ▼
Yes, every rod. Shot peening creates a compressive residual layer 0.2-0.5mm deep on the surface, which can increase fatigue life by 100%+. Many budget rods skip this step — we never do.

What piston materials do you use? ▼
2618 aluminum (heat resistant to ~300°C, high strength, for high boost/RPM) and 4032 aluminum (12% silicon, low expansion, tighter clearance, for street/mild builds). We primarily recommend 2618 for performance applications.
2618 vs OEM piston material — what's different? ▼
OEM pistons are mostly cast aluminum (A380/332) — lower strength, heavier, lower heat tolerance. 2618 is aerospace-grade forged aluminum, originally used in aircraft engines. It retains 80% of room-temperature strength at 400°F. This is why we can support 500+ whp reliably.
What rod materials are available? ▼
4340 chromoly steel (most popular, high strength/toughness) — 300-1,200 HP.
300M steel (40% stronger than 4340) — 800-2,500+ HP.

4340 vs OEM rod material — what's different? ▼
OEM rods are typically cast ductile iron or forged 40Cr/40MnB. 4340 is aerospace-grade ultra-high-strength steel with 1,800-2,000 MPa tensile (2-3x regular carbon steel). It won't fatigue at high RPM like OEM rods will.
⚙️ Connecting Rod Selection
H-Beam vs I-Beam — what's the difference? ▼
H-Beam: Cross-section is "H" shaped. Better bending resistance. Suited for high-torque/diesel/high-boost engines. I-Beam: Cross-section is "I" shaped. Better for lightweight/high-RPM builds. We make both — H for torque applications, I for RPM applications.
Why do high-horsepower engines need upgraded rods? ▼
At 8,000 RPM, the piston experiences over 5,000 G at TDC. The tensile and compressive forces on the rod are enormous. OEM rods bend or break under these loads. A broken rod usually destroys the entire engine block — a much more expensive repair than upgrading rods upfront.
What ARP bolts do you recommend for different rod materials? ▼
4340 rods: ARP 2000 (standard) or ARP L19 (upgrade). 300M rods: ARP 625+ (matching 300M's strength) or ARP L19. Titanium rods: Titanium bolts (preferred, prevents galvanic corrosion) or ARP 625+ with coating. Torque values differ by material — stretch measurement is mandatory for titanium.

Yes. Process: you provide ① engine model ② target HP ③ compression ratio ④ fuel type → we design → drawing for approval → sample → production. MOQ from 10 sets depending on complexity.
Can you make custom connecting rods? ▼
Yes — any length, any beam design (H/I/X/IQ), any pin size, any bushing material. 10-set minimum. Talk to our engineer directly — concept to drawing in 3-7 days, production in 4 weeks.
Can I get a material certificate? ▼
Yes. Each batch comes with a mill certificate (chemical composition + physical properties). Third-party reports (SGS/BV) available on request.
