Connecting Rod Materials: 4340, 300M, Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5 or Aluminum?

What this guide covers
This guide compares four material routes at a decision level: 4340 alloy steel, 300M modified 4340 steel, Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy (ASTM Grade 5) and aluminum alloys. JA-Modified has worked on titanium connecting-rod projects; the applicable grade and material condition are confirmed per project. This is an industry-selection guide, not a claim that every JA-Modified product uses every material listed.
4340 alloy steel
4340 is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy steel commonly used where strength, toughness and hardenability are required. Its suitability as a connecting-rod material depends on the actual material condition, heat treatment, forging or machining route, section design, fillets, bolts and inspection.
300M modified 4340 steel
300M is commonly described by materials suppliers as a modified 4340 route. It can offer a different strength and toughness balance from 4340 when processed to the applicable specification. That does not make 300M automatically better for every engine or every rod design.
Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy — ASTM Grade 5
When we say “titanium” in this selection context, the relevant named grade is Ti-6Al-4V, commonly identified as ASTM Grade 5. It is an alpha-beta titanium alloy used in engineering applications and is known for a combination of moderate-to-high strength, fatigue capability and lower density than steel.
The grade name still does not define a finished connecting rod. Forging route, heat treatment, surface condition, fastener design, notch geometry, oil-hole or counterbore design and the actual duty cycle must be evaluated. Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5 should never be presented as a universal replacement for a steel rod.
Aluminum alloys
Aluminum can be considered when low reciprocating mass is a central design target. The applicable alloy, temper, temperature, fatigue behavior, clearance and service-life expectation must be confirmed for the specific engine. “Aluminum alloy” without a grade and temper is not a sufficient product specification.
Decision table
| Route | What can be said safely | What still needs confirmation |
|---|---|---|
| 4340 | Established high-strength alloy-steel route with a broad performance-rod history. | Material condition, heat treatment, geometry, bolts and inspection. |
| 300M | Modified 4340 route for applications where its specified material condition is appropriate. | Exact specification, processing state and complete rod validation. |
| Ti-6Al-4V ASTM Grade 5 | Named titanium grade with a lower-density design route than steel. | Grade, product form, heat treatment, notch design, fasteners and duty cycle. |
| Aluminum | Low-mass route that is strongly application-specific. | Alloy, temper, temperature, fatigue and service-life requirements. |
What international brands show
Public product information from established performance brands shows that material is normally presented together with the rod design and hardware. Manley lists forged 4340 and 300M rod routes across different product families; K1 lists forged 4340 rods with H-beam designs, ARP fasteners, bushings, shot peening and inspection details. These examples support the selection framework, but they are not evidence for a JA product specification.
Questions to confirm before recommendation
- Engine model, displacement, stroke and rod length.
- Target power, maximum RPM, boost, fuel and tuning strategy.
- Piston mass, wrist-pin size and crankshaft configuration.
- Street, drag, circuit, endurance or other duty cycle.
- Material certificate, heat-treatment state, rod drawing and bolt installation data.
FAQ
Is 300M always better than 4340?
No. 300M is a different material route. The finished rod still depends on design, processing, fasteners, dimensions and validation.
Is Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5 the same as any titanium alloy?
No. Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5 is a specific named grade. Other titanium grades or product forms should not be substituted without confirmation.
Can the material grade alone tell me the horsepower limit?
No. A universal HP or RPM limit requires a specific rod design, engine, installation condition and supporting test or manufacturer data.
JA-Modified conclusion
The reliable answer is system matching: material grade + material condition + rod geometry + heat treatment + rod bolts + inspection + engine application. We recommend confirming the complete specification before production or installation.

B2B questions to confirm before a quotation
For an OEM, distributor or engine-builder project, a material name is only the starting point. The quotation and production route should be matched to the complete application.
- What information is needed? Engine model, quantity, drawing or sample, center-to-center length, bore sizes, stroke, piston and pin data, target duty cycle and intended market.
- Can JA-Modified support different material routes? 4340, 300M, Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5 and aluminum are discussion routes. Exact grade, product form, heat treatment and feasibility are confirmed per project.
- What quality documents may be requested? Depending on the project, customers may request material documentation, heat-treatment records, dimensional inspection and other agreed inspection records. Availability and scope must be confirmed before order.
- Are MOQ and lead time fixed? No. Quantity, tooling, drawing status, material route, inspection scope and production schedule affect the quotation. Confirm the current MOQ and lead time with JA-Modified.
- Can a sample or development order be discussed? Yes, the appropriate sample, prototype or production route should be discussed with the drawing, target quantity and validation requirements.
